1. Introduction

This data was compiled in 2012 using data from the Motor Trend website, new cars section.
This data takes into account different makes, models, and trims.
This data only contains 2012 vehicle data.
This data consists of most 2012 car models, with a few SUV/truck models thrown in for fun.
Below this spreadsheet are some charts that graph some of the data from this spreadsheet.
Most of the cars from Motor Trend's website were in this spreadsheet. It is known that there are a lot more 2012 models, especially supercars. It is thought that most of the cars in this list are cars that are legal to drive in the US. It is assumed that most of the other 2012 models that are not in this spreadsheet are not legal to drive in the US. Note that there are a few, but not many, models that were in the Motor Trend website that were left out of this spreadsheet. This spreadsheet takes into account perhaps 97% of the car models, perhaps 70% of the trim types. There are 106 different cars in this list.

3. Charts

The following charts use the data from the spreadsheet.

Fig 1. In this chart we want to minimize price and maximize fuel economy. The models in blue are the winners. The models in red (the supercars) are the losers. The formula at the top right in the chart is the formula for the trendline. A good sign about this chart is that better fuel economy cars tend to be cheaper.

Fig 2. In this chart we want to minimize the weight to horsepower ratio and minimize the price. The weight to horsepower ratio is weight over horsepower. We want to minimize weight of the vehicle and maximize horsepower, so we want that number to be as small as possible. The models in blue are the winners, which turn out to be the mustangs, camaros, and a corvette. These are your best bang for the buck. The losers are the are the models in red (the supercars and economy cars). The formula at the top right in the chart is the formula for the trendline. The straight lines are used to cut off the winners and losers. If you want to be careful on the money you spend yet want a weight to horsepower ratio competitive to the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Coupe at $387000, then try the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe at $111600, roughly a third the price of the lambo. It can be seen that as the weight to horsepower ratio decreases, the price increases.

Fig 3. What if you want to find a nice balance between power and economy? This chart attempts to show that. The trendline was generated for the data. Then lines of equal slope were used to reveal the winners and losers. You want to minimize weight to horsepower and maximize fuel economy. So you want to be in the lower right region of the chart. Following are the winners:

These cars are roughly equal on weight to hp vs mpg - they have roughly the same slope. It just depends on what kind of balance you want between performance and fuel economy.
