Mega Man 2 Boss and Weapon Order

Summary

The data was obtained from the IGN Board with the following topic: "Megaman 2 Boss Order?" on May 31, 2010 from the following URL:
http://boards.ign.com/mega_man/b6002/170965594/p1
Three approaches were attempted to find the best playing order: 1. The Mean Approach, 2. The Mode Approach, and 3. The Adjusted Mean Approach.

The boss and weapon order is the following.

Effective weapons against Dr. Wily's Castle bosses are the following.

Some Tips on Weapon Usage
• If obtained early on, Flash Man's flash stopper can be used at many points throughout the game in order to conserve time.
• Metal Man's metal blade seems to be an all-around handy weapon.
• Crash bomb can be used to get through some barriers, such as those in Flash Man's level.
• Item 2, the jet sled, can be useful in some areas, such as in Metal Man's level when moving on after obtaining the second energy tank.

1. Mean Approach

There were a total of 20 different playthrough orders given by 20 different people from the IGN Board described in the summary. The different playthrough orders were listed in order from 1 to 8.

The different bosses were then listed in order and the corresponding order was noted for each sequence. Then, at the far right of the table, the mean was calculated for each boss. The playthrough order was then listed according to the mean values. The lowest mean value indicates the boss that is played first, and so on.

The final playthrough order according to the mean approach.

2. Mode Approach

The far left column is the boss and the top row is the order number. The far right column ensures that all numbers add up to 20, which is the total number of player orders. Listed then in each cell is the number of times each order number occurs for each boss. Then, the most occuring order number, or numbers, for each boss is highlighted in gray.

Below is the final playthrough order according to the mean approach. There were 7 1s for Metal Man so he is definitely first. Heat man had 6 8s, so that made him last. Similarly, Flash man was placed into 3rd position and Crash Man into 7th. Remaining then were Wood Man, Bubble Man, Quick Man, and Air Man, all of which had more than one mode. From this, Bubble Man Was higher than Wood Man, so Bubble Man was placed into 2nd and Wood Man into 4th. Quick Man appeared to be higher than Crash Man so Quick Man was placed into 6th place and Crash Man into 7th. These determinations are presented in the list.

3. Adjusted Mean Approach

The adjusted mean approach takes into account the mode. Some of the bosses only had a one of a particular order number. All of those instances were deleted and the means recalculated based on the total number of order numbers for each boss. For example, from the mode chart above, Heat Man only had one occurance to be played 2nd. This was then deleted. This meant that the mean was calculated for a total of 19 numbers instead of 20. Notice the chart below is a copy of the chart from the mean approach, except all single instances of a order number are deleted for each boss. At the far right of the chart the means are listed and the orders noted.

Boss Order Conclusion

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 8th positions are in agreement.

It seems more logical to go with the mode approach, therefore the playthrough order is:

Weapon Order

Users from the same board also comment on the preferred weapons of choice for each boss. These are listed below.

In summary, these are the weapons to be used with each boss. The number in parenthesis indicates the number of times the particular weapon was suggested.

Some Final Notes

• If obtained early on, Flash Man's flash stopper can be used at many points throughout the game in order to conserve time, such as in stopping the gorillas in Wood Man's level, or the vertical drills in Metal Man's level.
